Federal Bureau of Prisons Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, use federal identifiers and federal records. No BOP prison was identified in Goochland County, Virginia, so this route applies only when a person was federally sentenced or a local record points to federal custody. A former federal prisoner may remain visible with a release date. “Not in BOP custody” has a narrow meaning and does not rule out supervised release, state custody, immigration detention, or another authority. Match the locator result with the federal judgment and later custody records.

Federal Release Paths

The Federal Bureau of Prisons holds sentenced federal prisoners. Its locator is not a Goochland jail roster and does not cover every person facing a federal case. A defendant held before trial may remain a U.S. Marshals Service prisoner in a regional jail and never generate a useful BOP result. A sentenced person may enter BOP later, then leave secure custody on a date stored in the federal locator.

A BOP release date means the Bureau’s custody ended for that episode. It does not state that all legal restraint ended. Federal supervised release can follow. A state warrant, state sentence, or ICE action can also produce immediate custody elsewhere. The receiving authority and federal docket are essential when the person did not return to the community.

Search a Federal Release

Open the official BOP Inmate Locator. A register number is the best key because names can match more than one person. The locator also permits a name search with race, sex, and age filters. Copy the result exactly, including any release date and the status wording.

  1. Search by BOP register number when one appears in the federal case or correspondence.
  2. If using a name, add all available supported filters and compare identifiers.
  3. Read “Released” or “Not in BOP custody” only as a statement about BOP.
  4. Check the federal court docket for the judgment, sentence, and supervised-release term.
  5. If the person never entered BOP, follow the USMS records route.
  6. If another sovereign took custody, use that agency’s locator or records office.

Keep an access date because databases change. The BOP locator retains historical results for many former prisoners, but the research does not support calling it a complete archive of every federal detention episode. A negative result can reflect a mismatched name, a pretrial USMS case, or limits in the database.

BOP Release Result Meaning

The wording on a BOP result should not be expanded. “Released” means released from BOP custody. “Not in BOP custody” says who does not currently hold the person, not where the person is now. Neither phrase alone proves the completion of supervised release or freedom from Virginia, local, or immigration custody.

Federal boundary: a BOP release is not proof of release from every authority. Check the next custodian and the controlling court order.

The federal judgment can show imprisonment and supervised-release terms, while the BOP result can show the Bureau’s recorded release date. A federal court docket may also reveal later modifications or violations. USMS prisoner-tracking records may fill the interval before BOP designation or document a federal prisoner housed at a local jail.

BOP register number
The federal prison identifier used for a precise locator search.
Supervised release
A federal court-ordered period in the community after imprisonment.
USMS prisoner
A federal detainee managed by the U.S. Marshals Service, often before or during court proceedings.
Detainer
A notice or request that can lead to custody by another authority.

Goochland Federal Custody

No dedicated BOP prison was found in Goochland County. The federal page exists because a Goochland-linked person can move between sovereign systems. Pamunkey Regional Jail may temporarily house someone whose status involves USMS, and a local release record can name a federal receiving agency. That transfer ends Pamunkey custody but is not community release.

Start with the arrest and custody source. If Pamunkey’s Booking/Release desk says USMS received the person, move to the federal docket and USMS. If a federal sentence was imposed and the person entered BOP, use the locator. If BOP later shows release but the person cannot be accounted for, review supervised-release terms and any receiving authority.

The Goochland County release-record path shows the earlier local steps. One internal transition is enough: do not keep searching Pamunkey after a verified federal transfer unless the person later returned for a distinct booking.

USMS Release Records

The U.S. Marshals Service maintains prisoner-tracking information for administrative processing, placement, safekeeping, and disposition of federal prisoners. It does not offer a public live roster that works like Pamunkey’s current-custody page. Its official FOIA route accepts electronic requests.

A focused request should name the person, known identifiers, the federal court and case, a narrow date range, and the exact placement or disposition event sought. State the desired format. Privacy Act and FOIA exemptions can limit third-party access to person-specific details, so do not ask for protected material merely to broaden the response.

The federal docket can answer a different question. It contains the controlling judgment and may show detention orders, sentencing, and later supervision matters. The docket does not necessarily record the exact hour a jail or BOP institution completed release. Pair judicial authority with the custody agency’s execution record.

Note: a person held for USMS at a regional jail may never appear as a sentenced BOP inmate.

Federal Transfer to ICE

A noncitizen’s end of BOP or USMS custody can lead to ICE rather than the community. Do not infer immigration custody from citizenship, birthplace, name, or silence in another database. A receiving-agency entry or direct official confirmation is needed.

When the federal record identifies ICE, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System. Search by the nine-digit A-number and country of birth, or exact name and country of birth with an optional date of birth. ICE’s guidance warns that coverage has limits. Call the Detention Reporting and Information Line at 888-351-4024 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, excluding holidays, when a lawful search is inconclusive.

Do not treat a BOP status and ICE status as one record. They describe different custodians and may update at different times. Keep the BOP register number and ICE A-number separate.

Federal Release Records Request

For BOP release documentation, identify the former prisoner by register number, full name, institution if known, and a specific date range. Ask for the releasable custody and release fields rather than a complete file. The federal court judgment should be requested through the court’s process, not mislabeled as a prison release record.

Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities nationwide
Use the official BOP Inmate Locator and agency records channels
Nationwide federal prison system
U.S. Marshals Service
Submit a focused request through the official electronic FOIA portal
Include court, case, date range, identifiers, and preferred format

Ask the custodian to segregate releasable facts from protected content. If the answer states that BOP no longer has custody, follow the records trail rather than assuming community release. A state department, local jail, or ICE may hold the next event.

The locator image helps identify the right input path, while the matched result and federal records supply the person-specific release evidence.

Federal Release Date Evidence

A federal judgment can impose both imprisonment and supervised release. Those are separate parts of the sentence. The BOP locator’s historical release date addresses the Bureau’s prison custody, while the judgment supplies the court-ordered supervision term. Later docket entries may show a modification or violation. None of these should be collapsed into one date.

If the person was held at Pamunkey for USMS, the regional jail release entry can show when local physical custody ended and which federal authority received the person. USMS records can cover prisoner tracking and disposition before BOP designation. After designation, the BOP register number becomes the best locator key. This sequence may contain several valid “release” events, each tied to a different custodian.

For precise confirmation, record the BOP result’s wording and access date, obtain the federal judgment, and seek the relevant custody record. If a state or ICE transfer followed, use the receiving system. A community-supervision address or personal detail should not be published merely to explain the transition.

BOP Historical Record Limits

The BOP locator retains many former prisoners, but no claim should be made that it is an unlimited archive. Name formats, age, historical data coverage, and whether the person ever became a sentenced BOP prisoner can affect results. A negative search is weaker than a matched federal docket or USMS record.

When sources conflict, preserve each identifier. Ask BOP to address its custody record and the court clerk to address the judgment. Neither office should be asked to correct the other agency’s data. This keeps the release conclusion tied to the source that created it.

Federal Releases and Goochland

Goochland’s facility map reverses a common location assumption. Pamunkey Regional Jail is in Hanover but officially houses Goochland detainees. Virginia Correctional Center for Women is physically in Goochland but holds a statewide VADOC population. Neither fact creates a local BOP prison. A federal search begins only when the sentence, docket, or receiving-agency record identifies federal authority.

This distinction belongs before any locator choice. Use Pamunkey for the adult regional-jail episode, VADOC for a state-prison term, and BOP for a sentenced federal prisoner. A building’s distance from Goochland does not determine the custodian or the release record.
